Harry Kondoleon Playwriting Fund

The Harry Kondoleon Playwriting Fund was established at the Huntington Theatre Company in Boston in 2006.  The fund, created by Christine Kondoleon, a Huntington Overseer, and her husband Fred Wittmann, will serve as a permanent tribute to Harry and will help to bring new plays for the American Theatre to the stage.

Financial support for young writers was critical to building Harry’s own confidence as a young playwright. This confidence allowed him to stand outside the mainstream and develop an individual voice.

“The Harry Fund” will serve as a lasting and meaningful endowment fund in support of the Huntington’s creation and staging of new plays for the American theatre, a commitment recently backed up when the Huntington built Boston’s first new theater building in 75 years – the Stanford Calderwood Pavilion. Within this new theater building are two new stages designed primarily to promote and present new work. Most important, the Huntington has created the Huntington Playwriting Fellows program. The program offers a two-year artistic residency for playwrights, focusing not necessarily on the creation of a new play, but rather on the process of writing itself, encouraging new ideas and new voices within a supportive and collaborative professional theatre environment.

To date, more than $200,000 has been contributed to this endowed fund which will generate income that will help to support the Huntington’s outstanding new play development initiatives, including the Huntington Playwriting Fellows program and the Breaking Ground Festival of new play readings.
